Joe had his acl surgery today. Everything went well. He is now at home, resting on the couch, watching television and sleeping.
The surgeon gave me pictures of his knee, and I will post those as soon as I can. Basically, he had no ACL left at all. He also repaired his medial meniscus.
He was pretty doped up this morning, thanks to a wonderful anesthesiologist. In addition to the usual anti-inflammatories and anti-emetics (anti-nausea), he gave him 300 mcg of Fentanyl, 2 mg of Dilaudid, and 25 mg of Demerol. In non-medical speak, that's enough pain medicine to stop a horse. That's a lot of drugs considering the entire procedure lasted only an hour and fifteen minutes.
He has his leg in an continuous passive motion machine. It flexes his knee for him. Most of the pain during rehab is from bending your knee, so this prevents it from being locked in the straight position. He is supposed to be up to bending it 60-90 degrees before his follow-up appt next Thursday. The machine is mainly used for total knee replacements, but Joe's doctor uses it for ACL's. Hopefully this will work and cut down on the pain during physical therapy.

Here is to a speedy recovery! I think those CPMs help lots, plus having a private duty nurse helps :)
That looks like something the dogs and toddlers should start jumping on right away.
